HISTORY OF MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

A Celebration of Diversity, Culture and Tradition

The Mid-Autumn Festival originated in the early Tang Dynasty, gained popularity in the Song Dynasty, and by the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it had become one of China’s most renowned traditional festivals, on par with the Spring Festival.

Since 2008, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been recognised as a national statutory holiday. On May 20, 2006, it was included in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the State Council. The traditional craft of mooncake making was approved and listed as part of the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the State Council in 2008. On April 29, 2022, the traditional craft of mooncake making (Cantonese-style mooncakes) and the traditional craft of Zhanjiang seafood-flavoured mooncakes were incorporated into the list of representative projects of the Guangdong Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage expansion.
